Adding Products. Main Data Entries and 'Other' Menu Items

Adding Art Products Involves completing mainly two sections:

  1. Firstly, as below in this Article, there are the Main Entry Boxes that include the product title and the main specification and descriptions, then
  2. Secondly, there are 'Other' menu Items. Includes various settings for your listing that vary in accordance with the product type. We will cover the 'Other' menu items in separate articles.
A preliminary link about them is as follows:

Adding Products Section 2. Other menu items

Adding Products Section 1. The Main Entry Boxes:

The main boxes Include:

  • Product Type Selection
  • Catalog Tick-box
  • (Choosing Keyword/Keyphrase for SEO)
  • Product Title
  • Price
  • Sale Price
  • Short Description
  • Description (i.e. long description)
  • Images - Main image and secondary images
  • Category selection
  • Tags

Product Type Selection:

This is a drop-down selection box at the top of the page as in this image

Select the product type that applies as your first step.

Catalog tick-box:

This selects a 'Catalog mode' for your product display on the Front End of the site. (Front end is what the customer sees). The product price and the 'Add to Basket' buttons will not be shown in accordance with your selection.
Notably, you will not normally require this feature!

(Other Menu Items are shown below, with Catalog Mode at the top of the 'other menu items' menu bar, in the below image)

Before we go to the next entry box:

Before we go to Product Title, which is the next entry box, it is important to note the following consideration:

Choosing a Keyword/Keyphrase for each art product and optimising your SEO

An important consideration when adding a product is its SEO, Search Engine Optimisation. Firstly, this requires choosing a suitable Keyword/keyphrase that the Googlebot and other Search Engines, will make use of when it scans your page.

Notably, the Keyword/Keyphrase then needs to be added to the following:

  • Product Title
  • Product Description (Long description) and,
  • The Meta Description

Please also refer to the Article on SEO here:

Your Dashboard Settings 3. - SEO | Store Policies | Customer Support

An example of a Keyword/Keyphrase is "Painting" or the phrase: "Daffodil Painting".

The keyword needs to be a descriptive term that a buyer might use to search for your art product.

Product Title:

This is an unlabeled box (outline in yellow below) beneath the Catalog tick box

Enter the title for your artwork, which is also used for the URL of your product page. It is therefore VERY IMPORTANT for your art product page SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) and needs to include your keyword/keyphrase.

The Product Title should be descriptive and less than 75 characters and as previously mentioned contain your Keyword.
As the product title is used for both your URL in addition to your Title in the shopping cart product page, this keyword is SEO critical in these locations. Search engines will recognise this as a keyword and as such is very important for customers to find your item!

An example of a suitable Title might therefore be as follows:

"Daffodil Painting: oil on canvas, 40cm x 60cm in natural wood frame"

Price and Sale Price:

(IMPORTANT: Prices need to be entered excluding any VAT tax charge).

The Price box on the left is for you to enter your asking price for the item. The Sale Price box on the right only requires a value if you are having a sale on the product. The 'sale' will be indicated in the shopping cart on the product listing pages.

If there is no sale just enter the Price entry only.

Short Description:

See the yellow box in the image above. This is a summary of your artwork details and answers the questions: what, why, how, where? Keep it to about 60 words. The keyword has little SEO influence in your short description but is very relevant in the next box discussed, the long description (should be in long description headings and content).

Description (long description):

Next is the Description or long description. Make it 200+ words if possible and include all relevant information about your artwork, that a customer will want to know.

This is another opportunity to promote your keyword/keyphrase, by using it in the description heading and in the descriptive text, subheadings and content.

- Start with a Heading - a Heading 2 size i.e. H2 from the dropdown, which is a preformatted text size in the appropriate HTML. And, include your Keyword.

- Content General - Use H3 and H2 subheadings. Use the Keyword/Keyphrase 3 or 4 times in the general text if possible but keep it natural and avoid keyword stuffing

- Image - Include an image here as well if you have something that helps your description. Also good to add your Keyword/Keyphrase in the image Alt text.

Images:  Main and Secondary images (See Yellow box):

The main product image is displayed on your Product Listing page as the larger image square indicator. See the Green Box in the image above. The secondary image(s) are displayed as the small square indicator(s). Purple Box above.

You have one main image, which is mandatory, and one or more secondary images, or none.

Secondary images can be used to support your product descriptions and details plus options and variables. Eg. colours for frames, mounts, etc.

Adding your images:

Start by adding your main image. Click on the green box image symbol and it opens your Media Library, the page with the "Choose image" title: see images below.

Then click on the Select Files button under the "Upload File" tab (indicated in the yellow box). This offers you the File Upload screen for your image which you need to locate on your computer.

Click on the 'Open' button to add your image to the media library (media library in second image below).

Adding your secondary image:

Follow the Adding Images procedure to also add your secondary image(s) as required.

Notably, click on the '+' secondary image indicator to add an additional Secondary Image and on the 'x' indicator to delete an image if you change your mind about your image. See the screenshot above.

You can also change the order of the secondary images by clicking and dragging.

Front End screenshot below (What the customer sees) Product Page Example:

Remember to 'Save as draft' as you make changes so that you do not lose your work!!

Next: Category Selection:

In the Categories section (see yellow box above) choose one, and only one, category for your product. Note, this determines the Main Menu item that your product will be displayed under in the website front end: Paintings, ArtPrints, photography etc.

However, please note that the Art Merchandise Category, which has an adjacent little red arrow, has secondary categories accessed by the red arrow symbol. Again, choose one of the secondary categories only.

Tags:

Tags or 'Product Tags' are a way to relate to your products in a more detailed way than categories.

For example, if you are selling prints with a cat picture, you could add a tag for "cat".

In other words, Product tags are descriptive labels you can add to your artwork. Popular search engines can use tags to get information about your store.

You can add more than one tag separating them with a comma.

Catalogue Visibility:

This is a drop-down selection just below the tags entry box. It should normally be set to "Shop and search results"
